Today, on April 26, according to the resolution of the UN General Assembly, they honor the living liquidators of the accident at Chernobyl NPP and honor the memory of the departed – for the first time all over the world. Events dedicated to the 31st anniversary of the nuclear disaster were held in our city either.
Zaporizhzhia Chernobyl veterans traditionally gathered in the Palace of Culture “Orbita” to honor the memory of those liquidators of the accident who are no longer alive, to see friends with whom they worked in Chernobyl zone.
“So many years have passed, and we are alive – that means we will continue to live!” – said Pavel Bilan, the chairman of city public organization “Zaporizhzhia Chernobyl veterans”. He thanked the city authorities and “Zaporizhstal” Steel Works for constant attention to the problems of Chernobyl veterans.
This time Zaporizhzhia Chernobyl veterans received warm plaids as gifts from steel workers, and a week earlier, with the sponsorship of “Zaporizhstal” Steel Works, they made a trip to the places of their military glory, where they pacified the raging peaceful atom thirty-one years ago.
— Today, for the first time around the world, the World Day of Memory on the Chernobyl nuclear power plant disaster is celebrated. And those people who at the expense of their lives, at the expense of their own health, made every effort to stop this disaster, need constant attention and support. Our “Zaporizhstal” Steel Works systematically supports Chernobyl veterans, comprehensively assists them. These people made every effort to give the opportunity to live to everyone else,” – said Sergeyi Ilchenko, Head of youth organization of “Zaporizhstal” Steel Works.
In 2017, the Steel Works assisted Zaporizhzhia liquidators by UAH 85 000. Such support for Chernobyl veterans will be also in the future.
