In accordance with the program of technological modernization of production equipment, “Zaporizhstal” performed overhaul of the 2nd category with elements of modernization of blast furnace No. 5. Financing of overhaul amounted to more than UAH 200 million.
The main purpose of repairing blast furnace No. 5, that lasted for 36 days, was to restore the resource and design characteristics of the unit, increase the reliability of work and improve the quality of the products.
As part of the overhaul, the bell-less top was replaced, the inspection and repair of the equipment of the foundry yard was performed, and the refractory lining of the furnace was restored. The Blast Furnace received a new cooling system: its stable operation is provided by a new pumping station in combination with new cooling plates and cooling elements.
The solutions implemented during the overhaul will allow not only ensuring the stability and maximum efficiency of the furnace, but also reducing heat losses and, consequently, reducing the consumption of coke during the production of cast iron.
It should be noted that the total weight of metal structures installed during the overhaul of BF No. 5 is over 1 thousand tons; the weight of refractory materials is about 1 thousand tons.
