On the occasion of the State Flag Day and in honor of the 30th anniversary of Ukraine Independence, Zaporizhstal Steel Works of Metinvest Group installed a national flag on a cable-stayed bridge in Zaporizhzhia, which is being built as part of the Big Construction program. A huge flag is located on the pylon of the bridge at the highest point above the river Dnieper – 95 m from the water surface.
“For the 30th Independence Day of Ukraine, the metallurgists of Zaporizhstal wanted to present the city with a special gift. We have installed a huge national flag on the main pylon of the cable-stayed bridge in the middle of the Dnieper, which can be seen from many points of the city, which personifies our support for the country in the construction and strengthening of a strong independent Ukraine”, said CEO of Zaporizhstal Aleksandr Mironenko.
For the main public holidays, the design bureau of Zaporizhstal has developed a special project to install the flag of Ukraine on the pylon of cable-stayed bridge under construction. A 41×27 m flag was specially sewn for installation. Taking into account the special wind loads experienced by structures over the river, special slings were stitched throughout the flag area and air valves were made to reduce windage and preserve its integrity.
Together with the construction company “Onur” and a group of high-riggers from the company “Promalpinism”, the flag with a total area of 1100 m2, fixed on a special mounting metal beam, was lifted onto a pylon and securely fastened. Including the preparatory stage, the installation of the unique structure lasted about three days.
Traditionally for the holiday, the CEO of the plant Aleksandr Mironenko raised the national flag at the highest point of Zaporizhstal Steel Works – the top of blast furnace No 3 at a height of 85 m. State flags have been updated on all administrative buildings of the enterprise, and national flags have been additionally installed on the main pedestrian walkways of the enterprise.
