“ZAPORIZHSTAL” IRON AND STEEL WORKS ALLOCATES 1.1 MILLION UAH FOR IMPLEMENTATION OF SOCIAL INITIATIVES OF ZAPORIZHZHYA CITIZENS

“Zaporizhstal” Integrated Iron and Steel Works summed up the results of the projects contest within the program “We Are the City” in Zaporizhzhya. 17 social projects of the citizens became finalists and received from “Zaporizhstal” Integrated Iron and Steel Works financing in the amount of 1.1 million UAH for implementation of their initiatives in the course of 2014. The works will grant each finalist up to 100 thousand UAH for implementation of their projects.

Contest “We Are the City” has been held for two years in a row within the corporate social responsibility program of Metinvest Group. Its goal is improving social activism of the population and supporting relevant projects, aimed at improving the quality of life in all cities where Metinvest operates.

The contest started in April of 2014 and was held for three months. Within this period 123 applications for participation in the contest were submitted, training on social project planning was held for all participants in cooperation with Rinat Akhmetov’s charity foundation “Development of Ukraine”. During June the contest’s expert committee determined the winners in main directions of the contest: improvements and environmental care; development of business environments and creation of new jobs; sport and healthy lifestyle; support of vulnerable segments of the population, and volunteering.

“The future of Zaporizhzhya lies in our hands. Together with Zaporizhzhya citizens we invest into development of our hometown, together we create the environment, where initiatives are not only born, but also become a reality”, stated the CEO of “Zaporizhstal” Integrated Iron and Steel Works Rostislav Shurma.

Due to initiative of the citizens and support of “Zaporizhstal” Integrated Iron and Steel Works, in 2014 children’s corner of fabulous nature will appear in Zaporizhzhya botanical garden, as well as an outdoor gym in the settlement Vesyoloe, aid will be provided to the elderly persons with visual disabilities and much more.

The projects were assessed by the expert board according to approved criteria which are being in demand and being realistic, the extent to which the project idea is developed, originality, social significance, project sustainability after the completion of financing. The expert board consisted of: the General Director of JSC “Zaporizhstal” Rostislav Shurma, Deputy Chairman of Zaporizhzhya regional state administration Pyotr Goncharuk, the People’s Deputy of Ukraine of the VII convocation Evgeniy Kartashov, the Director on engineering of “Zaporizhstal” Integrated Iron and Steel Works Vladimir Buryak, the representatives of Zaporizhzhya non-governmental organizations, youth and media.
