The Central laboratory is the scientific and engineering center of Zaporizhstal JSC. The scientific achievements of the Works have undergone tests and been acknowledged by the enterprises of the branch of industry both in Ukraine and in the CIS countries, by scientific research institutes and by international certification centers. The peculiarity of the scientific work at the Works is its aim at development and introduction of effective technological and technical measures. Today the work of the Central laboratory is determined by a combination of the experience of laboratory management which has science-degrees of doctors and candidates of sciences, highly skilled engineers and young specialists sent to the Central laboratory.
In 2008 the specialists of 13 laboratories carried out 4 tasks financed by Research and Advanced Development, 4 tasks on introduction of new techniques and 53 research scientific works, carried out without special financing. 43 of these research works were introduced in the shops of the Works. The efficiency of the introduced works in 2008 amounted to 93.3 mln UAH, 92.8 mln UAH of which is due to the reduction of the prime cost of products. Each spent hryvnya brought the Works additional income of 19.94 UAH. The results achieved are provided by daily creative work and commitment of the Central laboratory specialists in cooperation with the collectives of the following departments: technical, production, economic and planning, technical control, technical re-equiping of main funds, automation and metrology, computer center, automation control system of the technological process, equipment department and others, divisions of the chief mechanic department, chief power department and the production shops of the Works.
At present other not less significant works are being carried out with the collaboration of the Central laboratory specialists. The task is to lead the Works in the near future to the most contemporary technical and technological level. The engineers of the blast-furnace and central chemical laboratories actively participate in the creation of the pulverized coal injection plant for the injection of pulverized coal fuel into the blast furnaces; the collectives of engineers of the laboratories of the Central laboratory — steel smelting, refractory, rolling, metallurgical and reheating furnaces, rolls, central chemical laboratory, the express-control laboratory of the Works’ products testing and others, directly participate in the design monitoring of the converter steel production complex and contemporary rolling process stage.
