Zaporizhstal Spoke at the National Forum “Eco-modernization-2021”

On March 29-31, 2021, the II Annual Ukrainian Forum on Industrial Ecology “Eco-modernization-2021: Best Practical Solutions” was held. The forum brought together more than 200 participants: representatives of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine, specialized associations and national industrial enterprises. Within the framework of the forum, Zaporizhstal presented a case study of the eco-modernization of sinter plant.

The head of the environmental protection department Inna Kholina emphasized: “Zaporizhstal took a course towards ecologization production long before the implementation of European environmental directives in Ukrainian environmental practice. Since 2012, Zaporizhstal has developed and is implementing a program of environmental modernization of the enterprise, with particular emphasis on the modernization of sinter production, which is the main source of dust emissions into the atmosphere. Zaporizhstal has invested more than UAH 1.2 billion in the eco-modernization of the sinter plant; it has achieved 90% reduction in dust emissions, and 50% reduction in sulfur oxide emissions. Highly efficient bag filters provide air purification from dust – up to 30 mg/m3, for sulfur dioxide – below 400 mg/m3”.

The experience of the Works in equipping all new and modernized facilities of the enterprise with online monitoring sensors, which allows controlling the operation of cleaning equipment, aroused particular interest among numerous forum participants.

The Works presented a project for the ecological modernization of the aspiration units of the tail units of sinter plant, where, following the example of the main technological gas purification units of sintering machines, proven bag filters, as well as sensors for continuous environmental monitoring of the treatment plants operation, were installed. Now, the project is at the final stage of implementation.

In addition to Zaporizhstal, the forum was attended by other enterprises of Metinvest: Mariupol Metallurgical Plant named after Ilyich and Central GOK.

In total, more than UAH 15 billion has been allocated since 2012 for the eco-modernization of Zaporizhstal.

In 2021, the management company of Zaporizhstal, Metinvest, celebrates the 15th anniversary of its foundation. Metinvest is an international vertically integrated mining and metallurgical group of companies. The structure of the group includes mining and metallurgical enterprises in Ukraine, Europe and the USA, as well as a sales network in all key regions of the world.
