The Ecological Commission of the City Council held a meeting to assess the environmental activities at JSC “Zaporizhstal”. This review was crucial for ensuring adherence to both Ukrainian and European ecological standards.
On December 20, 2012, at JSC “Zaporizhstal”, there was an on-site meeting of the standing commission of the city council on ecology, dedicated to the issues of environmental-related activity of the Steel Works.
Jointly, with members of the deputy commission on ecological issues, the mayor of the city, Alexander Sin, checked the progress of ecological project implementation on the installation of dust gas cleaning equipment at sintering machine №1. Commissioning of new equipment would permit achieving a decrease of dust emission volumes by about 70% per year and sulphurous anhydride by over 28%, which would correspond not only to Ukrainian standards but also to European standards of environmental management. Investments in the project amounted to approximately 240 million UAH.
“Today I personally ensured that everything we discussed with Rostislav Igorevitch, immediately after his appointment as General Director of JSC “Zaporizhstal” in context of ecology, is being implemented," stressed Alexander Sin, the mayor of Zaporozhye. "And today this was visually confirmed at the finished environmentally protected sites. The Steel Works has actually fallen behind in fulfilling its ecological commitments, which were included in the work schedule of city and regional ecological programs.”
During the meeting, the General Director of JSC “Zaporizhstal”, Rostislav Shurma, informed in detail the members of the city ecological commission about the top-priority lines of nature protection activities of the Steel Works over the last four months of 2012 and shared plans for the near future.
“We have no intentions to stop with what has already been achieved in solving ecological problems,” pointed out Rostislav Shurma, General Director of JSC “Zaporizhstal”. “From now on, we will continue step-by-step equipping our sintering machines with modern electrical precipitators and begin the construction of a waste solutions regeneration plant for the cold rolling mill, which will allow us to resolve the issue of untreated water disposal into the Dnieper River.” The project budget for the regeneration plant amounts to 730 million UAH.
We remind that JSC “Zaporizhstal” is certified according to the requirements of the international ecological standard ISO 14001: 2004. In September 2012, an audit checking of the integrated management system in the fields of quality, ecology, and labor safety of JSC “Zaporizhstal” was conducted by the “Veritas” international bureau (Paris). The audit confirmed that the production activities of JSC “Zaporizhstal” during 2011-2012 were carried out in accordance with all international requirements and regulations of Ukrainian legislation in the field of environmental protection.
