Since 2024, Metinvest Group and Zaporizhstal have been implementing the "Free Waves" project, aimed at the mental and physical rehabilitation of war veterans and active military personnel. Almost 300 male and female defenders have already joined the programme in Zaporizhzhia. They have undertaken a unique water-based rehabilitation programme developed by Olympic medallist Denys Sylantiev. In 2026, Metinvest will scale up the project in Zaporizhzhia to ensure that the programme reaches more active military personnel and veterans.

Throughout an 18-month period, training sessions based on a specially developed method were held at one of Zaporizhzhia's swimming pools under the supervision of a certified coach. To ensure barrier-free access for veterans, the pool was equipped with a lift to help participants enter the water. This year, Metinvest, Zaporizhstal, and the NGO "Zaporizhzhia. Platform for Joint Action", in cooperation with the Department of Sport, Family, and Youth of the Zaporizhzhia City Council, are scaling up the project: there will be three training locations in the city. Due to continued financial support from business, the aquatic rehabilitation for defenders will remain free of charge for its target audience.

"Swimming sessions are an effective way to restore physical and emotional health after the stress and injuries experienced during combat operations. Such a form of rehabilitation is considered one of the safest and helps to process traumatic experiences gently and gradually. Water removes negative tension, reduces the load on the body, while also helping to restore joint mobility and strengthen muscles. It is impossible to create such conditions for recovery anywhere other than in water," said Denys Sylantiev.

The programme is based on Denys Sylantiev's original method aimed at the comprehensive recovery of the health of veterans who sustained injuries while defending the country. The project is based on a scientific approach and modern water-based rehabilitation and adaptation practices. Depending on the nature of their injuries and their condition, each participant receives custom-made recommendations and support from a qualified coach at the beginning of the training programme. This helps to achieve tangible results in restoring physical health and psychological balance.

Today, the "Free Waves" project is being implemented in three cities where Metinvest operates ‒ Zaporizhzhia, Kryvyi Rih, and Kamianske. Over the 18 months since the project was launched, approximately UAH 4.4 million has been allocated to support the recovery of defenders' health. The "Free Waves" programme is open to veterans and active military personnel undergoing rehabilitation.
