“Ask the Doctor”: Epidemiologist Oleg Ruban Answered Current Questions about Coronavirus

On January 20, 2021, the Rinat Akhmetov Foundation held a live broadcast with the Honored Doctor of Ukraine, head of the main department of the State Food Service in Kiev, epidemiologist Oleg Ruban. The broadcast took place within the framework of the Foundation project “Ask the Doctor” jointly with the “Ukraina” TV channel. This is a series of online meetings with reputable doctors, who teach everyone about everything have to know about the coronavirus.

Oleg Ruban received dozens of questions from the audience. One of the most popular question was: “When will we defeat the coronavirus?”

“Coronavirus, like any infection, stays with us forever. Therefore, use a mask, keep the social distance, do not communicate with people who are likely to be sick,” the epidemiologist replied.

The doctor also told viewers about the reasons for the decline in the number of COVID-19 cases, which can be observed in official statistics. In fact, the pandemic is not receding, and the decline in confirmed COVID-19 cases is more due to the human factors.

“We have a decrease in laboratory investigated COVID-19 cases. This is due to distrust of primary health care, a decrease in the number of medical visits for mild symptoms. This has been observed since the first week of December. In addition, unfortunately, this mistrust is growing,” said Oleg Nikolaevich.

He also noted that the change in the algorithm for diagnosing the disease also influenced the official statistics. Algorithm that will give statistics closer to the truth:

“Today antigens have been proposed, which should be used in every clinic and give a result in 15 minutes. However, today it is not implemented [everywhere], because the supply of these antigens only started one week ago. We will see an increase of the incidence of illness this week. This is due to a natural factor in all acute respiratory viral infections. They always rise sharply in the third to fourth week, with peak numbers in February.”

Oleg Ruban explained that the new method would allow ambulance doctors who visit patients with COVID-19 symptoms to diagnose the disease:

“It became available today even in villages. At all points, in medical institutions. However, doctors and nurses have to learn how to work with these tests.

The audience was also interested in the issue of vaccination against coronavirus.

“It is essential to vaccinate without fail, this is the only civilized way to overcome the epidemic, but it is necessary, first of all, to vaccinate risk groups. These are people over 65, people with chronic lung diseases, medical personnel,” said Oleg Ruban.

According to the doctor, vaccines will begin to arrive in Ukraine in February. The question of how the mass vaccination of the population will be carried out is still being worked out:

“This is a big problem. Measures are being taken to form vaccination centers. People will have to come for the vaccination, undergo a [preliminary] medical examination, and, if necessary, detect antibodies.”

According to Oleg Ruban, vaccination in Ukraine will be voluntary.

“It will be possible to talk about compulsory vaccination when the third stage of clinical trials of vaccines takes place,” the epidemiologist said.

Watching the full version of the broadcast, you will learn about Oleg Ruban’s attitude to the so-called private vaccination, when community immunity appears in Ukraine, about the reasons for the successful fight against coronavirus in China, an unprecedentedly high incidence rate in the United States, and much more.
