A new strain-gauge railweight balance of 100 t load-carrying capacity maximum has been put into operation at “Zaporizhstal” Works within the scope of implementation programme of the weighing equipment upgrading.

In September this year, a programme of stepwise upgrading of the weighing equipment started at “Zaporizhstal” Works. One of the key aspects of the programme is upgrading of the electronic weight measuring systems in Open-Hearth Furnace production process. The general amount of investments into this stage makes up about UAH 3 million.

The obsolete mechanical beam balance had been replaced with a strain-gauge weight measuring unit, equipped with modern metrological equipment and a personal computer with high-tech software. The modern balance allows performing accurate measuring, recording and controlling of the freight flows, to minimize the effect of the human factor upon the weight measuring process. Industrial operation of the new balance would reduce production costs, increase rationality in the usage of raw material resources, and provide accurate recording and control for each kind of scrap.

The next stage of the weighing equipment upgrading in the Open-Hearth Furnace Shop will involve finalizing the erection of two additional strain-gauge balances in the Burden Preparation Section. It is planned to put into operation the new weight measuring complexes by the end of this year.

“Among the priority guidelines of the enterprise activities is the upgrading of the production facilities and increasing effectiveness,” says Rostislav Shurma, the General Director of “Zaporizhstal” Works. “Systematic work in automation and upgrading of the weight measuring processes at all the production areas would allow us to increase efficiency, reduce costs, and improve product quality.”
